Right to ‘Bear’ arms at work draws heavy debate

“Honestly, I can find a new job. It’s an awful lot harder to find new internal organs.”

These words were spoken by Shannon “Bear” Cothran last week after he thwarted an attempted armed robbery at the Shell gas station where he worked by pulling out a handgun.

The Main Street gas station owners fired Cothran, who had worked for them for more than 10 years, a few hours later because he violated the store’s policy that employees can’t carry guns at work.

The story drew hundreds of comments.

Many, such as Holly “Forbes” McRoberts, came to Cothran’s

defense, saying he should get his job back.

“I know why companies have these policies, but still. Bear shouldn’t have been fired for defending himself and the store,” McRoberts wrote.

Glenn Trowbridge agreed.

“Just because it is company policy doesn’t make it right to fire the guy,” Trowbridge wrote.
